L'histoire des jantes Borrani

Le 22 avril 1922 vu la création à Milan de la société italienne «Rudge Whitworth Milano» avec un capital social de un million, deux cent mille lires. Le propriétaire s'appellait Carlo Borrani et l'entreprise était située à Via Ugo Bassi 9, son activité étant la fabrication et la vente des «roues pour voitures, motos, bicyclettes et équivalent».

Ce fut le début officiel de l'histoire remarquable des jantes Borrani. La première production fut lancée sous licence de Rudge Whitworth à Coventry, qui avait déposé un brevet pour le montage d'une roue métallique à l'aide d'un moyeu unique et un tambour cannelé, le tout rendu solidaire par un écrou central, le résultat étant une facilité et rapidité remarquable de montage et démontage de la roue à rayons.

Cette invention a tout de suite suscité l'intérêt des plus importants constructeurs de voitures. Après seulement 12 mois de production, Alfa Romeo, Auto Union, Bianchi et Lancia ont commencé à équiper leurs voitures de course et de luxe avec des jantes Borrani.

Plus tard, dans les années 30 la Société modifia son nom et adopta Carlo Borrani SpA. Au cours de cette même période Borrani commenca à expérimenter les jantes légères rigides en aluminium dans le but de remplacer les jantes en acier ordinaire.

Période de croissance

En 1955, les locaux de Via Bassi devinrent exigus, ne pouvant plus contenir les volumes de production mensuelle en hausse de 1000 à 1200 puis 1500 jantes en l'espace de six années. La société fut rebaptisée «CMR» pour «'Costruzioni Meccaniche Rho S.p.A.», et relocalisée sur un nouveau site. La production des jantes à rayons se poursuivit associée à la marque Ruote Borrani Milano.

Dix pour cent de la production de jantes Borrani a été consacrée aux voitures de course. A cette époque, Ferrari était le meilleur client de Borrani. Cette alliance ne fut pas accidentelle car en 1924, le jeune Enzo Ferrari courut et gagna le trophée du Acerbo à Pescara au volant d'une voiture équipée de jantes à rayons Borrani de 'Rudge Whitworth Milano'.

La popularité de Borrani atteignit également le monde de la moto en tant que fournisseur des fabricants de renom tels que Benelli, Gilera, Guzzi et MV Agusta pendant que chez les constructeurs automobiles, Ford monta les jantes à rayons Borrani sur la première version de son emblématique GT40 et qu'il engagea aux 24 Heures du Mans. Pendant cette période, des milliers de victoires nationales et internationales ont été obtenus par des voitures équipées de jantes à rayons Borrani.

L'ère du Bimetal

Après une période de succès des jantes à rayons, la jante en fonte d'aluminium a graduellement pris le marché comme équipement d'origine. Dans le souci d'amélioration, Borrani a commencé à monter un disque en acier embouti dans les jantes en aluminium existantes. Ces jantes "bimétal", qui étaient déjà produites en 1954, ont eu leur juste part de succès et ont été montés sur des marques célèbres comme Alfa Romeo, ASA, Abarth, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati et autres.

Carlo Borrani was a pioneer in the field of alloy rims for wire wheels, and also used these rims for a light wheel with steel centre-piece, initially called "CABO", and later "Bimetal". Many of these wheels were sold in the 50's & 60's either as factory fitment, or as sports upgrades for brands like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Maserati.

Following numerous requests from all over the world, Borrani recently decided to re-issue a limited edition Bimetal wheel for Lancia, identical to the original project (which was launched in July 1952 for the Aurelia models). Now suitable for all six B20 series and other Aurelia variations, the basic wheel measures 165 x 400, using an alloy rim with steel centre-piece, ideal for fitting the Pirelli Cinturato 165x400 classic tyre. A Bimetal wheel for Flaminia models will follow in due time. Faithful to tradition, the new Bimetals weigh around 20% less than conventional steel wheels, thus importantly reducing the un-sprung weight, and improving the car's handling. As many are ordered for competition & rally use, the wheels are available with or without hubcap attachments at the client's choice.

La société Borrani

Ruote Milano srl, located in Rozzano, in the southern part of Milan, has recently taken over the production of Borrani wheels.

This included all the historical tooling, machines and materials, the specialized workforce, and the complete technical archives , which go back to 1922. All of this is now located in a 3000 sq-m factory specially renovated for this purpose.

Even the most sophisticated robots cannot replace the capable hands of workers who make Borrani wheels with enthusiasm and skill, with the highest quality and reliability as final objectives. Ruote Milano's first target is to supply the complete historical Borrani product range, including wire wheels for competition use and special products.

Ruote Milano produces Borrani wheels for classic and vintage cars including: Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Austin-Healey, Chevrolet, Cisitalia, Ferrari, Ford, Iso, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lancia, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes, MG, Osca, and Porsche. And for formula race cars, small sports barchettas and formula Junior such as Bandini, Ermini, Stanguellini and many more.

Ruote Milano are the only company who can offer professional restoration of existing Borrani wire wheels with steel or aluminium rims, including the replacement of all spokes, balancing, polishing, chroming and/or painting.

It is also possible to manufacture Borrani wheels for those cars which were not originally equipped with them. Typical spare parts like hubs, drums, locking nuts, 3 or 2 eared spinners and octagonal nuts are now available from stock.

The complete Borrani archives include all the original projects and drawings for all standard cars, and for special cars equipped with Borrani wheels. This forms a crucial support to answer the wide range of requests from customers all over the world.

All Borrani wheels were developed in close collaboration with the related car makers as a complicated and sophisticated technical product. Borrani wheels in most cases were an integral part of the car's homologation and were also extensively tested as such.

All Borrani aluminium rims are identified by a stamped RW-code of four or five figures, the unique Ruote Borrani Milano stamping (there are several variations), and a stamped internal production number. These codes also apply to the hubs. All numeric codes correspond with Borrani technical and production documentation.
