History of the Ford Sierra
1987 Ford Sierra RS500
The Ford Sierra, a mid-size family car introduced in 1982 at the British International Motor Show, stood out due to its aerodynamic design, which featured a drag coefficient of 0.34. Unlike its predecessors' boxier looks, the Sierra's smooth, rounded contours, which were sometimes referred to as the "jellymould," sparked opposition from some.
The Sierra was available in a variety of body types and engine capacities ranging from 1.3 to 2.3 litres, meeting a wide range of demands. The 1983 XR4i model, powered by a 2.8 L Cologne engine, had a unique three-door bodyshell and double rear spoilers, making it very popular among car nuts.
The Sierra Sapphire received significant improvements with its 1987 debut, including a redesigned front end as well as revised indicators and headlights, giving the car a more current appearance. The term "Sierra," taken from the Spanish term for "mountain range," emphasised Ford's focus on durability. The Sierra's performance derivatives, notably the RS Cosworth and RS500, were highly successful in motorsport. Throughout its existence, the Sierra received several upgrades to trim levels, engines, and safety features, eventually becoming one of Ford's best-selling vehicles by 1993 and laying the path for its replacement, the Ford Mondeo.
