Citroen Type C History
The Citroen Type C was a light car produced by Citroen from 1922 to 1926. This car goes by a few different names, the Citroen Type C, the Citroen 5 HP, Citroen 5CV, or its typically British name, the Citroen 7.5HP. This was Andre Citroen's second model of car he designed and marketed, following the Citroen 10HP cars. The car was displayed at the 1921 Paris Motor Show, although orders and deliveries made for the car would be received the following year. The car displayed was a small torpedo-bodied two-seater, elegant in design despite the car's small stature. The selling price of the 5HP Torpedo was more than half of Citroen's own 10HP B2 and still much lower than its main competitor, the Peugeot Quadrillette.
Andre Citroen innovated what we now see as standard in purchasing, maintaining, and owning cars with the 5CV. He made a consumer credit company that allowed customers the option to buy cars on credit for the first time. The 5CV included the first spares and repairs manual, detailing factory repair rates and exchange methods for parts. This was also one of the first cars marketed towards women, with all of the advertising documents representing a car driven by a young woman. The car was a tremendous success, selling 81,000 models in its brief production years, Louis Renault said it was "The car that kept him from falling asleep", the success of this was due to its technical prowess, robustness and ease to repair, as well as the fantastic marketing Andre Citroen devised. Of the final production total, it is estimated that around 3000 cars have survived.
