History of the Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France
After racing in the 10-day Tour de France car race, the first 250 GT Berlinetta, nicknamed the "Long Wheelbase Berlinetta," was also dubbed the "Tour de France." Seventy-seven Tour de France vehicles were produced, with a number of them sold for GT racing between 1956 and 1959. Carrozzeria Scaglietti handled the construction, which was developed on a design by Pinin Farina. The engine began with 237 horsepower and gradually increased to 256 hp.
Scaglietti exhibited their own 250 GT prototype at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show, which became known as the limited-production, Series I, "no-louvre" 250 GT Berlinetta. The first customer vehicle was constructed in May 1956, with Scaglietti in Modena now in command of manufacturing. There were fourteen "no-louvre" and nine "14-louvre" Series I and II Berlinettas built.
There were four different series of the 250 GT Berlinetta. The Series III vehicles, with three louvres and covered headlamps, were launched in mid-1957. There were eighteen made in total. The covered headlamps and single vent louvre remained on the 36 Series IV vehicles. Zagato also produced five "no-louvre" superlight vehicles designed by Ugo Zagato. In 1956, 1957, and 1958, a 250 GT Berlinetta won the Tour de France Automobile three times. The 'Interim' and SWB Berlinettas will continue Ferrari's winning streak in subsequent races.
